SAE 2013 Design, Manufacturing and Economics of Composites Symposium

January 29 - 30, 2013
Torino Incontra Conference Centre
Torino, Italy

The performance of composites makes them attractive in a variety of applications. However, composites have historically not been a very cost competitive option to metals due to several factors - primarily very expensive materials and labor intensive manufacturing methods. As more automated manufacturing methods for composite components are beginning to be developed, the total cost come down helping to offset the issue of raw materials which makes composites a more viable material resource in aerospace, automotive and wind energy industries.

Successful implementation of composites depends on many factors - component design, tooling approach, and manufacturing process selection. Each is integral to building cost effective composite components.

This two-day symposium will focus on design, tooling, and manufacturing topics across a wide range of industry segments. Additionally, this symposium will address a variety of economic issues that are typically considered when implementing composites. Come hear from a variety of experts as they discuss how composites are being used as a viable option to other materials.

International Conference within Mecatronic Connection 2012

ATA and SAE Torino Group, in cooperation with EpOSS and InTO MECH, are pleased to announce the International Conference "Mechatronics: latest key technologies for transportation, production and health".

Land and air transportation, as well as industrial production and health are more and more featured by the need to reduce defects and costs, but at the same time to increase energy efficiency, sustainability and safety. Mechatronics combines different tools (electronics, mechanics, information technology, control systems) to achieve these outputs. The Internet of the Things is taking over in industrial processes simulation as an intelligent system to reduce failure and resources. How mechatronics will be modifying people life and industry worldwide is the core topic of the International Conference Programme.

The congress is going to be held within the 5th edition of " Mecatronic Connection 2012", the B2B events that will bring together Buyers and Suppliers from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland working on mechatronics applyed to transportation, production and health.

Registration on

Access to the conference is free for Buyers & Suppliers registered to Mecatronic Connection.

All thematic conferences are organized by ATA-Associazione Tecnica dell'Automobile (the Italian Automotive Society based in Orbassano), SAE Group Torino (Turin branch of the Engineering Association based in Detroit) in cooperation with EPoSS (European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration) and InTo MECH (Torino-Piemonte mechatronic cluster project, financed by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and managed by Piemonte Agency with the technical support of the Piemonte mechatronic innovation pole MESAP).

TO ZEV - June 9-10, 2011

This symposium has addressed both powertrain and automobile body systems approaches towards “zero emissions vehicles”, more specifically: fuel consumption and emission reductions achievable through electric motors and advanced internal combustion engines technologies and powertrain hybridization and electrification, low rolling resistance tires, aerodynamic improvement, and infomobility services.

Organizing Commitee:

  • Michael Bargende - IVK/ FKFS-Universität Stuttgart
  • Marzio Bianchi – From Concept To Car
  • Giovanni Cipolla – Former GM Diesel Advanced Engineering & Hybrids Director
  • Antonello Cogotti – SAE Fellow
  • Jan Macek – Czech Technical University Prague
  • Carlo Andrea Malvicino – Centro Ricerche Fiat
  • Federico Millo – Politecnico di Torino
  • Mauro Velardocchia – Politecnico di Torino
  • Jochen Wiedemann - IVK/ FKFS-Universität Stuttgart
  • Steve Wollenberg - Automatiks

A two day, two parallel track technical program provided to attendees an insightful look at new and developing technologies addressing the ambitious ZEV targets, including:

  • Combustion optimization and emissions minimization, including new aftertreatment technologies
  • Hybrid & electric powertrains
  • Electromobility
  • Alternative Fuels
  • Innovative transmission concepts
  • Vehicle concepts modeling (EU FP7 VECOM project)
  • Vehicle Aerodynamics
